Public school is a conditional choice before renting

Public school merits a shortlist before committing to rent, provided the family accepts a Greek-language transition. The residential catchment and proof of address constrain that choice. For the 2026 to 2027 school year, late-enrolment vacancies can override the preferred school.

For a family reconsidering English-medium private fees, the starting point is whether that language transition suits the child.

Age, language, address, fees and hours decide the school choice

Which stage can each child enter?

For 2026 to 2027, a younger sibling could apply to any public kindergarten. Applications ran from 12 to 16 January 2026; district children had priority.

Grade A entry for that school year covers children born from 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2020.

What Greek-language transition can the child manage?

For a primary-age newcomer without Greek, programme participation matters. Participating primary schools allocate time for Greek as a second language for children with a migrant background.

Under the Regulations of 2024 to (No. 2) of 2025, that child may enter the immediately lower class, including pre-primary. Neither provision establishes an age or intended-stay threshold for choosing public school.

Does the rental address secure the preferred school?

Under the legislation, children of compulsory school age are enrolled in the school of their educational district according to their residential address. A written transfer application to the District Education Office requires district-school enrolment confirmation. The competent officer must approve it.

For rented accommodation without a refuse bill, address evidence includes both the rental agreement and electricity bill.

What does private tuition cost per child?

A family comparing two children’s separate bills needs cohort-specific tuition, rather than one assumed school budget. The table uses the 2026 to 2027 fee compilation for Foley’s Junior School and American Private School Limassol. Paphos’s figures come from its own schedule.

Selected annual tuition per child, academic year 2026 to 2027
SchoolCohortAnnual tuition per child
Foley's Junior School, Limassol districtFirst two primary years€8,400
American Private School LimassolFirst two primary years€6,570
International School of PaphosFirst two primary years€6,140

At the International School of Paphos, new-student assessment and admission add €115 and €260 respectively. The €1,000 non-refundable reservation deposit per child is credited against tuition, not added to it.

The International School of Paphos schedule for 2026 to 2027 lists a primary composite fee of €250 and primary books at €340.

Does the school day fit working hours?

A parent working beyond the morning needs a separate childcare plan. Public primary lessons start at 07:45, with seven forty-minute teaching periods daily. Those lesson hours alone do not cover that parent’s working day.

Three school-specific points need confirming for each child

The District Committee for Special Education and Training assesses children with disabilities, special educational needs or learning difficulties.

Individual confirmation is needed for:

  • Which school's catchment the address falls in, whether a place is vacant on the arrival date, and whether the school accepts the address documents
  • The language of teaching and the Greek-language support the child will actually receive
  • Whether all-day provision is currently offered, what meals cost, and what special-needs support has been granted to the child

The school’s head teacher and the District Education Office of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth should confirm these school-specific points. A Cyprus-licensed lawyer should check the lease and proof-of-address documents.

Admissions rules decide whether a later transfer is possible

Public primary transfers for the current year, or the next after January enrolment, require a written application to the District Education Office.

Private secondary is a possible route for some families. The English School’s 2026 policy offers very limited places in Years 2 to 4, through June examinations only, with no mid-year admission.

School fit and address come before enrolment

  1. Match each child’s birth date and language needs to the routes above.
  2. Shortlist rental addresses against the published 2026 to 2027 catchments.
  3. Assemble applicable enrolment documents and compare itemised private-school offers.
  4. Complete enrolment or the relevant late-arrival procedure before committing non-refundable school funds.

The 2026 to 2027 primary and kindergarten enrolment windows have passed. For the 2026 to 2027 school year, no new enrolment period is held, except for pupils who could not enrol in the period for a justified reason. Children of compulsory pre-primary age who present after 16 January 2026 must go to the District Education Office. Under the regulations, pupil enrolments take place in January, electronically.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child attend public school regardless of nationality?
Yes, for 2026 to 2027, a child of any nationality residing in Cyprus has the right to enrol in public primary school. That right applies regardless of whether the parents or guardians are legally resident on the island.
Is a passport enough to enrol in public primary school?
No, a passport is not among the identity documents listed for 2026 to 2027 Grade A enrolment. The list names a birth certificate, ID card or Alien Registration Card (ARC), in addition to the address evidence. A vaccination record and a pre-primary attendance certificate are also required.
Does my child need to manage self-care before public kindergarten?
Self-care is normally a basic condition for public kindergarten enrolment under the law. The exception covers a child with special needs assessed by the District Committee of Special Education and Training.
Do parents need to consent to Greek-language support?
No written parental consent is required for participation in the Greek-as-a-second-language programme in 2026 to 2027. School management informs parents or guardians of their child's participation.
