Relocating to Cyprus means choosing the right residence route, tax residence timing, housing, healthcare and family setup before arrival. EU citizens register after 3 months, while non EU nationals need a visa or permit route. Cyprus tax residence starts at 183 days, or 60 days with the qualifying ties.

What You Get

Relocating to Cyprus is not one task. It is a sequence of immigration, tax, banking, housing, healthcare, schooling and business decisions that need to line up before the move becomes stable.

Tax Rebase turns the move into a managed relocation plan. The plan identifies the right entry and residence route, the tax year to target, the documents to prepare, and the local registrations to complete after arrival.

  • Residence route: EU registration, work route, digital nomad route, family route, fast track permanent residence, or an investor led option such as the Cyprus Golden Visa.
  • Tax position: timing for Cyprus tax residence, non dom eligibility, employment exemptions, company structure and reporting calendar.
  • Family setup: housing, schools, healthcare access, driving, insurance and banking.
  • Arrival sequence: what to complete before arrival, within the first 90 days, and before the end of the tax year.

The outcome is a move coordinated around dates, thresholds and evidence.

Residency Routes

The correct route depends on nationality, work model, income source, family members and property plans. A UK national after Brexit is treated differently from an EU citizen. A remote founder is treated differently from an employee hired by a Cyprus company.

  • EU citizens: free movement makes entry simple, but residence registration is still part of a settled move for stays beyond the short stay period.
  • UK and other non EU nationals: short stays do not create a long term right to live in Cyprus. A visa, work permit, residence permit or permanent residence route is needed for relocation.
  • Remote workers: the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa is open to non EU/EEA nationals working for foreign employers or clients. The minimum net income is €3,500 per month, increased by 20% for a spouse and 15% per child. The application is filed in person within 3 months of arrival, and the programme cap is 1,000 permits.
  • Employment moves: a role with a Cyprus employer can support a Cyprus Work Permit route where the employment and immigration documents are aligned.
  • Permanent residence: fast track Category 6.2 requires at least €300,000 plus VAT in a new developer property, plus secured annual passive income of €50,000, increased by €15,000 for a spouse and €10,000 per child.

Tax Timing

Tax timing is one of the highest value decisions in a Cyprus move. A residence permit does not automatically make the tax year efficient.

Cyprus tax residence is reached by spending 183 or more days in Cyprus in a calendar year. The alternative 60 day rule applies where the individual spends at least 60 days in Cyprus, does not spend more than 183 days in any other single country, has a permanent home available in Cyprus, and has Cyprus employment, a Cyprus directorship or a Cyprus business running through 31 December.

From 1 January 2026, the old requirement to prove that the individual is not tax resident anywhere else was removed. That change makes the 60 day rule more practical for internationally mobile founders, investors and senior employees with split travel patterns.

The 2026 personal income tax bands start with a 0% band up to €22,000, then 20% on €22,001 to €32,000, 25% on €32,001 to €42,000, 30% on €42,001 to €72,000, and 35% above €72,000. New residents in qualifying first employment in Cyprus earning over €55,000 per year can receive a 50% income tax exemption for 17 years, subject to the statutory conditions.

Non dom planning remains central. Cyprus non domiciled tax residents pay 0% Special Defence Contribution on worldwide dividends and most interest for 17 tax years. For investors and founders, the Cyprus Non Dom analysis should be completed before the first tax resident year is triggered.

Work And Business

Work status drives immigration, tax, social insurance, payroll and healthcare. The relocation plan should confirm whether income will come from foreign employment, Cyprus employment, a Cyprus company, overseas companies, investments, pension income, or crypto activity.

Cyprus corporate income tax increased to 15% from 1 January 2026. The tax loss carry forward period was extended from 5 to 7 years, and the IP Box 80% deduction remains available for qualifying IP income. For founders, that makes structure and substance more important than choosing Cyprus on the headline rate alone.

A Cyprus company can support a broader relocation where there is real management, contracts, payroll, banking and local substance. The Cyprus Company Formation route should be assessed together with residence and personal tax, not after the family has already arrived.

Crypto holders need separate treatment. Cyprus does not tax every crypto profile in the same way, and the analysis turns on activity type, frequency, entity use, source of funds and reporting. The Cyprus Crypto Tax review belongs in the pre move stage for founders, traders, miners and long term holders.

Home And Family

A stable move needs a home, schooling plan, healthcare path, insurance position, driving setup and banking access. These items are practical, but they also create evidence for residence, tax and family registration.

Housing decisions carry tax and cash flow consequences. A reduced 5% VAT rate can apply to a primary and permanent residence on the first 130 square metres where the total value is no more than €475,000 and the total area is under 190 square metres. The standard VAT rate is 19% outside the relief conditions. Capital gains tax remains 20% on gains from Cyprus immovable property, while securities and shares remain at 0% under the current rules.

Healthcare should be sequenced correctly. Employees contribute to the General Healthcare System at 2.65% of gross pay, with income capped at €180,000. Employers contribute 2.90%. Private cover is commonly planned for the entry period, then the GHS position is aligned once employment, residence and contribution status are active.

Driving, vehicle import, local licence steps and insurance affect the first months. For families, school availability, catchment preferences and commute times can decide where the residence address should be secured.

Money Decisions

The real budget combines rent deposits, property VAT, permit costs, translations, insurance, school fees, banking setup, travel, vehicle costs and advisory work.

For retirees and financially independent families, pensions and investment income need a country by country review before payments are redirected. Cyprus residence, the non dom window, foreign withholding tax, treaty position and remittance flows can change the net result.

For employees, the decisive numbers are salary level, first employment eligibility, employer location, social insurance, GHS contributions and the date employment starts in Cyprus. For entrepreneurs, the decisive points are where management and control sits, whether a Cyprus company has substance, and whether the founder’s personal tax residence lines up with the company’s operating reality.

For property led moves, the fast track permanent residence threshold of €300,000 plus VAT is only the entry number. The income test, family additions, developer purchase condition, funds transfer from abroad and the visit requirement of once every 2 years all need to be built into the plan.

Your Move Plan

The strongest Cyprus relocation plan starts with the end state: where the family will live, which income remains offshore, which income moves to Cyprus, when tax residence starts, and which permit keeps the household compliant.

Sequencing matters because Cyprus deadlines are calendar driven. The 60 day tax rule looks to the calendar year and 31 December ties. The digital nomad application is tied to the first 3 months after arrival. First employment relief depends on salary, start date and prior tax residence history. Permanent residence depends on property type, funds source and passive income. Miss the order and a deadline forecloses a route that was open weeks earlier.

The concierge plan turns the framework into a document checklist, arrival calendar and coordinated handoff map, so the move progresses without chasing separate providers for each step.

Why Cyprus Works

Flexible Tax Residence

Two routes to residence let internationally mobile people choose the one that fits their actual travel pattern.

17 Year Non Dom

A long shelter on worldwide dividend and interest income, set before your first tax resident year is triggered.

Employment Relief

Senior hires relocating to Cyprus can halve their income tax for well over a decade, if the start date is planned right.

Permanent Residence Route

A property purchase can anchor the whole household in permanent residence without an annual renewal treadmill.

Healthcare Planning

A capped national contribution gives the family system access, bridged by private cover during the entry period.

Founder Friendly Base

A low headline corporate rate plus an IP Box regime rewards real substance, not paper structures.
